The Rising Use of Cannabis in Older Adults

The legalization of cannabis in different states has changed the mindset of many people. Cannabis and cannabis culture is now in the mainstream. What used to be illegal is now the focus of many researchers, mostly for potential health benefits. If you asked an older adult about cannabis ten years ago, you might get a lecture on the dangers of recreational use. Overall, it might not have been a good chat.

Today, the conversation has changed. With hemp-derived CBD as a common cannabis product, you can now freely talk about cannabis use to a larger majority of people than in the past. Now the conversation, most probably, will be about the numerous positive potential effects and less about the dangers of recreational use.

With a renewed interest in the potential treatment of many health issues, more adults over 65 are using cannabis products, including hemp and CBD. The legalization of hemp in 2018 was impactful to open their eyes to the many positive effects of cannabis. Whether they are looking to treat health issues or preventing aging-related symptoms, older adults are now interested in cannabis more than ever. The steady rise in cannabis use among the 65 and over demographic shows that.

Are your parents smoking pot?

The number of seniors reported to use cannabis has increased dramatically from 2015. It only shows that there is an overwhelming interest in cannabis use among older adults for the potential treatment of health conditions and symptoms associated with aging.  A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine showed a steady increase from 0.4% in 2006 and 2007 to 2.9% in 2015 and 2016, then a sharp rise to 4.2% in 2018. That's a big jump!

The study reviewed data from almost 15,000 participants, adults 65 and over, from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health spanning from 2015 to 2018. Calculating for both absolute and relative changes in prevalence during the study period, identified participants, that included adults 65 and over who consumed cannabis in the past year, gave their experience. An interesting point, women had a higher cannabis use increase rate than men year after year. Is it indicative of the marketing efforts towards women in general? We don't know.

One thing is for sure, the stigma associated with cannabis use has changed. What if cannabis can help with my arthritis, anxiety, etc.? Will I ever know? With legalization in many states, the curiosity is at its peak, especially for the elderly. Even with past stigma, lack of clinical studies, and limited research, more people, older adults included, are still willing to find out if cannabis can be beneficial to them.

The rise of cannabis use among the older demographic has its pros and cons. Yes, there are potential health benefits, however, the possible adverse side effects can be problematic for some older adults.

CBD and Older Adults

With possible adverse effects on older adults, education is key. Smoking and inhaling cannabis might be the method of choice for some, but there are relatively healthier ways to consume cannabis— such as CBD gummies, capsules, or topicals.

Unlike THC, CBD does not produce a "high," as many elderly don’t want to get high, they just want to feel better. CBD has the potential to ease health issues and improve the lives of senior citizens in this way. But, a small amount of THC can be beneficial in conjunction with CBD.

There is some concern with CBD though. CBD can interact with other medications, including blood thinners and Meloxicam. It does this by reducing how fast the drug is broken down, effectively increasing the dose in your system. You can imagine how dangerous this can be with blood thinners. Please talk with your doctor about potential drug interactions if you are taking medication.
