Is CBD Good for Sleep?

Sleep, it's important

Everyone knows that getting a good night’s sleep is important for both mental and physical health. And lack of sleep can be detrimental for your overall health and well-being.

For those that suffer from inadequate sleep many drugs or behavioral changes might not work to help, so now that CBD has become so common that many people are asking “is CBD oil good for sleep?"

CBD for sleep?

CBD has been touted for a variety of ailments, but limited research has been done to support these claims. One claim you may have heard is that CBD will help you get better sleep or treat insomnia. This could be true1, but CBD might help in a different way than you may think.

Many people are wondering if CBD can help them sleep better and the answer may be more complicated than a simple yes or no. CBD will not act like THC to get you “high” leading to common drowsiness afterward.

CBD is not considered a sedative, like Ambien, or other sleep-inducing medications you may have heard of, like melatonin. However, CBD may help reduce pain and anxiety that keep you up at night. Maybe aching joints from years past or sore, cramping muscles from a hard workout keep you up at night. Or maybe you have trouble stopping the endless string of worrying thoughts.

The Studies

Smoked cannabis can help with pain and improve sleep2, but that is a whole plant as medicine with high levels of THC. Here we are focused on CBD itself. CBD can by itself reduce pain, which according to this study will help those whose pain keeps them up at night.

In a paper titled Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series3, the authors suggest, “Cannabidiol may hold benefit for anxiety-related disorders. Controlled clinical studies are needed.” But it is mostly related to anxiety reduction.

Another study states4, “The present findings support the proposal that CBD do not alter normal sleep architecture. Future studies should address the effects of CBD on the sleep-wake cycle of patient populations as well as in clinical trials with larger samples and chronic use of different doses of CBD. Such studies are desirable and opportune.”

There are more clinically relevant studies, dealing with rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder5 and other sleep related problems, but overall the evidence is somewhat limited in various clinical populations.

To keep things confusing, one study indicates hypnotic effect of CBD6 and another states wake-promoting effects7. And CBD may work on a bell-curve 8 where very low or very high levels have different effects than moderate levels of CBD.

Overall, CBD may be helpful for sleep in situations that reduce anxious thoughts or soreness keeping you up at night. For many of those who deal with insomnia, anxiety causing an overactive mind is a major culprit and CBD is thought to help with this. Similarly, CBD is thought to reduce pain and inflammation, so if your lower back or knee is constantly nagging you as you try to rest, then CBD can help you sleep easy.
