About Cannabinoids

What is CBD?

CBD (Cannabidiol) is an organic compound that comes from the hemp plant. It is one of over 100 unique compounds found in hemp, known as cannabinoids.

Cannabinoids, which can be either made by plants (phytocannabinoids) or produced naturally by the body (endocannabinoid), are chemical compounds that interact with the body’s own endocannbinoid system. This system is known to manage homeostasis and regulate bodily processes.

CBD is an example of a phytocannabinoid. Although our bodies can naturally produce their own endocannabinoids that bind to cannabinoid receptors in both the central and peripheral nervous system, phytocannabinoids are thought to help regulate our bodies as well.

What is the difference between Marijuana and Hemp?

Both marijuana and hemp are forms of cannabis. However, cannabis does not mean marijuana. Cannabis is the genus name and an umbrella term under which all forms of marijuana and hemp belong. According to the 2018 United States Farm Bill, hemp must have 0.3% or less THC (the psychoactive compound that causes the feeling of “high”). The reason hemp is so special is that it has high concentrations of CBD and low concentrations of THC. Marijuana is, on the other hand, often cultivated to contain as much THC as possible. At TruPotency, all of our our products are sourced from hemp and laboratory tested to have less than 0.3% THC.

What are Phytocannabinoids?

Phytocannabinoids are the naturally occurring cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. These plant-based cannabinoids starkly contrast to both synthetic cannabinoids (manufactured artificially) and to endocannabinoids, which occur naturally in the bodies of animals and humans alike.

Cannabinoid receptors in the human body help regulate many biological processes. These receptors can be activated by the natural endocannabinoids produced in the human body or by phytocannabinoids found in cannabis (hemp and marijuana).  The phytocannabinoids delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol (CBN) have become the most widely known for their numerous benefits.

What are the differences between CBD oil and Hemp oil?

CBD oil is frequently referred to as “Hemp Oil” and the terms can be used interchangeably.  There is, however, a cold-pressed hemp oil derived only from the seeds of the plant that does not contain CBD. It is important to distinguish between hemp oil made from seeds that contain no CBD, and hemp-based oil that does contain CBD. Look for clearly stated amount of CBD in milligrams(mg), as this denotes the amount of CBD in the product.

What is hemp and how does it work?

Hemp, a plant cultivated globally for hundreds of years, is a member of the cannabis genus. It is a very valuable and versatile herb that has countless uses. Phytocannabinoids are naturally occurring in hemp and studies have shown that these can help support your body’s internal endocannabinoid system. Cannabinoid receptors can be activated by the natural endocannabinoids produced in the human body or by phytocannabinoids found in cannabis (hemp and marijuana).

What other cannabinoids are also found in hemp oil?

Hemp oil may contain over 100 cannabinoids, including the following:

  • THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
  • THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)
  • THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid)
  • CBV (Cannabivarin)
  • CBT (Cannabicitran)
  • CBN (Cannabinol)
  • CBDA (Cannabidiolic Acid)
  • CBDV (Cannabidivarin)
  • CBE (Cannabielsoin)
  • CBG (Cannabigerol)
  • CBGV (Cannabigerovarin)
  • CBL (Cannabicyclol)
  • CBD (Cannabidiol)
  • CBCV (Cannabichromevarin)
  • CBC (Cannabichromene)
  • CBGM (Cannabigerol Monomethyl Ether)

What are the differences between Full Spectrum and Isolate products?

The term Full Spectrum relates to the hemp extract which can contain dozens of cannabinoids, not only CBD, but also CBG, THC, CBN, CBC, CBL, CBT, CBE, CBR, CBF, CBCN, and other acidic cannabinoids all found naturally in the hemp plant. An assortment of cannabinoids can contribute to the “entourage effect."

The term Isolate refers to a chemically reduced version of the hemp extract which contains a single cannabinoid, such as CBD.

What is the “Entourage Effect”?

If you listen to music, you know that it takes more than one note to create a song, and more than one instrument to create a band. Much like a well-orchestrated symphony, cannabis compounds can work together to create what is known as the “entourage effect,” an interactive synergy created by the combined presence of terpinoids and cannabinoids.

Certain compounds called terpenes or terpinoids can be combined with cannabinoids to create a synergistic effect (think 1+1=3). Because of naturally occuring variation in these compounds from plant to plant and product to product, products may contain unique combinations of cannabinoids and terpenes that produce different combined effects.

What does “Aerial” mean when referring to “Aerial parts of the plant” in the ingredients?

Aerial refers to the part of the plant that is above the ground that is harvested to produce the CBD oil. Many companies are vague about this term, and refer only to the industrial hemp stalk, since the leaf and resins are often in legal limbo depending on the state. The leaf and the resins increase the amount of CBD available in each plant.

How long do I have to wait before noticing any effects from CBD?

The onset can range from 5 minutes to an hour or longer, depending on the type of application and the strength of the concentration. Regardless, you will experience the best results with regular use of CBD and effects can build over time with continued use.

  • Sublingual (tinctures, oils, lozenges, sprays) - these products enter your body by being placed under the tongue.

  • Oral (edibles, capsules, beverages, oils) - these products are taken by mouth and enter the body through the stomach.  Since these are pre-measured and often appear indistinguishable from everyday food items or other supplements, it makes them discreet and travel-friendly.

  • Topical (lotions, salves, creams, roll-ons, balms) - these products are rubbed into the skin like other lotions or creams you are familiar with.

  • Transdermal (patches) - these products are specially designed to enter your body by penetrating the skin. Since these are pre-measured and low profile, transdermals are discreet and travel friendly. Easy-to-apply and keep hidden, they can quietly help with a wide variety of concerns.

Will CBD make me feel high?

While some users of CBD have reported stress relief, it does not cause the "high" associated with the cannabis compound. The molecule responsible for the classic “high” is THC. Although THC can be present in CBD products, it is present at such a low levels that it should not cause any psychoactive effects. The products you see on TruPotency are laboratory tested by a third party to make sure they are produced from hemp that contain less than 0.3% THC.

How will the CBD make me feel?

Depending on your reason for using the CBD, your results can be very rapid or gradual. Every every person is different and every product is different, so the best way to find out where to start would be to take our CBD assessment to find the best product usage to start with. Users often report tha they experience reduced stress from a long day, relief from soreness after a workout, and more. Regardless, you will experience the best results with regular use of CBD.

How much CBD should I take?

Since CBD affects everyone differently depending on a number of factors such as method of use, frequency of use, strength of product, time of day, body weight, and body chemistry, there is no “One-Size-Fits-All” solution. Also some products contain only isolated CBD while others contain cannabinoid blends (aka, "full spectrum" or "broad spectrum"). For this reason, we recommend “start low and go slow” as you can always take more but you cannot take less.

Safety & Legality

Is CBD legal?

Although laws may vary by state, the passing of the 2018 United States Farm Bill allows US farmers to grow and sell industrial hemp. This bill states that we American citizens can now study, manufacture, sell, and consume products created from industrial hemp that contains less than 0.3% THC. At TruPotency, all of our products are tested by third-party laboratories that comply with the 2018 United States Farm Bill.

Do any of your products contain THC?

THC is a naturally occurring organic compound in the hemp plant. According to the 2018 United States Farm Bill, hemp must not contain more than 0.3% THC. The products available at TruPotency are laboratory tested by third party facilities to ensure compliance with this regulation. In addition, we offer a variety of THC-free products.
